Tree Pendant Necklace, Sterling Silver, Swarovski Crystal, Pearl (32" length chain)

One of my friends requested a necklace like this, and I presented it to her on Christmas! She loved it and I hope you guys do too. It's the first time trying this style of design. I am really happy with how it turned out, but I am not sure at this time if I will add it to my Etsy Store as a regular item. What do you think? It was a lot of intricate work, and cost quite a bit for the high quality material (sterling silver).

Here in Calgary it's 5 degrees celcius outside! I want to wash my car! I had zero days off from work leading up to Christmas, Working Tuesday through Friday (9-6) and Saturday, Christmas eve (9-4). I really wished to have some time off to do errands, shop and prepare for Christmas, so it's been stressful trying to get all the orders completed as well as do my own personal things! Lots of friends to see as well. Life is good, and it's the most festive Christmas I've had in years. Kyle's place is looking so nice, we put up our own lights, a tree and the presents underneath are taking over the living room!

Halloween Round-up: Duffgirl, Zombie Vomit and Mario

Duff Girl!!! Oooooh Yeah!

Hope you all had a great Halloween! It has become one of my most anticipated non-stat holiday of the year, mostly credited to my friend Wayne's annual house parties! This year his party was on Oct. 29th, the Saturday before Halloween day. Nice friends and lovely desserts that Wayne always makes, I am inspired to bring a Halloween themed treat to share at the party as well! Enter: Zombie Vomit, recipe courtesy of DearAnge.

Zombie Vomit: If you want to do the two tone, two flavour that I did, the day before make grape jello. Add chopped grapes if you like. For zombie vomit green portion: get lime jello, mix with the boiling water, while hot, whisk in some sour cream to create the opaque green color!!! Add chopped maraschino cherries, crushed pineapple from a can (strain out the liquid first) and any other fruits to your liking, (just do not use fresh pineapple, as the jello will not set). Add slightly less amount of the cold water (with jello you use even parts hot and then cold water usually), to make it a bit thicker than regular jello. Ange created hers with a jelly mold. I love this recipe and it was easy to eat for guests in the portioned clear cups! Tasted really good too.

For my costume, I was Duffgirl, a take off of Duffman from the Simpsons! I personally hate beer but I really like the character. I put together the costume from: Value Village for the top, new leggings and cape also from VV, the red hat from Lids in Chinook Center, the belt was used from Divine off 17th ave, the socks from Sears kids section. The large white duff labels I made on the computer and printed onto sticker paper. The can labels I printed onto regular paper and made sleeves to slip onto the cans. My boyfriend helped me rivet the cans onto the belt. He also had the sunglasses, a promotional item from his work - Perfect! I actually ordered tall white sneaker boots from ebay, but they haven't arrived yet :(.

This year's pumpkin... I purchased the pumpkin 3 weeks before halloween! I wanted a really big, "perfectly" shaped one! haha I went a bit more ambitious than I have in previous years, and decided either to do a Calgary Flames themed pumpkin or a Mario one. I found the image of Mario online, Couldn't find a free templates available, but found someone else who did this same face before, and found a graphic of the original face, and printed the original cartoon onto paper. This image was large enough that it used 1 and a quarter sheets of paper (wide). I used sticker paper for the larger portion too, it helps when outlining your design. My friend had this pumpkin carving tool kit and it was amazing to use! Particularly the rolling tiny teeth tool was really useful in outlining the design, and the two saws for cutting the detailed areas. It was my first time not using a kitchen paring knife to cut a pumpkin. I do confess to using the paring knife a couple times for some of the straight, bigger lines, as it cuts really smooth lines and quickly too.

On the actual day of Halloween, it was also my German friend's last night here in Calgary, she made her home made Spaetzle German noodles with lentils and European Sausage. It was so good, and very special as it is something that I'll probably never know how to make myself :p. We also gave out candy, over 60 kids stopped by my boyfriend's house!

Maddy's Wedding Headband

My dear friend Maddy requested me to make this for her! How gorgeous did she look at her Mexico destination wedding? So fabulous and romantic. I was so happy that she loves her the custom made accessory, and that it was a part of her special day. The headband was made of Swarovski crystals, pearls and various pretty silver metal beads. She told me she's putting her wedding accessories into a memory box that is displayed on the wall. Thanks again Maddy!

100 Handmade Wire Words

Recently received a really great challenge. An order for 100 Custom Name Wine Charms. Prior to, the most I have made for one order was 17.

100? No problem I thought, but it did take longer than predicted. I missed Stampede festivities (annual week long western themed festival celebration here in Calgary) but it was worth it! This order was from Molly and Neil of California, USA. They are getting married, and their wedding, appropriately so, will be held at a Winery. Molly told me that she plans on having each charm attached to individual seating cards, set up at the welcome table.

The items are shipping out today! So excited for her to see them. Check out some photos of the work in progress. The charms are 'handwritten' soley by hand. No template, simply writing the letters one by one with the wire and a pair of round nose pliers and regular small pliers. They are dainty and lightweight, and do get tangled easily if they are all thrown together carelessly. I was able to ship the work to her on three sheets of paper, as seen in the second last photo. The names of her guests were printed out and labeled on the left side as well, so it will be easy for her to find each of the names.

Edit: August 19th. Post wedding, I heard back from Molly and she said they were a huge hit! Everyone really liked this creative wedding favor that they could take home. Molly then requested 5 more charms, repeats of a couple of her guests because they forgot to take theirs home, and still wanted a little memento from her wedding celebration. What a pleasure it has been to take on a project like this and to work with Molly (a delight!).

The evening of the 50th Anniversary celebrations was very nice! There were alumni from all decades, the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s and beyond. One of the original teachers, from 1961 came up during the assembly to say a few words, she was so cute. The celebration committee worked very hard to organize a variety of entertainment and refreshments for everyone. Current students performed at the assembly, a dance group, the choir and a drama presentation.

Entering The World of Two Wheels

My friend Jenna and I took the Motorcycle course at Calgary Safety Council back in August 2010, and we learned so much. They began with teaching us the parts of the bike, what to check for before getting on a bike. If I remember correctly, "F.I.N.E" stands for Fuel, Ignition, Neutral and Emergency brake. You should go over these steps before you begin to ride.

Our class was quite a large group, so we were split up into two, with two instructors each. We took the weekend course, which was 9-5pm on a Saturday and Sunday. Alternatively, people could take the course on weeknights, from 6-9 I believe for 3-4 days.

I went from never starting up or sitting on a moving bike... to being able to safely ride around in the parking lot. Jenna I returned for extra practice with Alfred, one of the instructors. I've certainly gained a lot of confidence in knowing more about how to handle motorcycles, but have a lifetime of practice ahead of me. My next goal is to get more experience and practice to obtain my license.

Another weekend of painting has come by, it's been 4 sessions so far.

Prior to the beginning of the Alumni coming in to work on the painting Lil had some of her current students to help clean the wall and prep it with primer. Kevin also came in and did the grid on the wall. The original drawing was created by Justin, and Shannon created the colour scheme in photoshop for us to follow.

The Concept

A celebration of Henry Wise Wood (HWW)'s 50th Anniversary. A place where Scholars, Artists and Athletes emerge. We have the image of Mr. Henry Wise wood on the left, big letters of HWW, will have 50 years written next and imagery of a Warrior helmet. The look is urban, contemporary, graffiti inspired.

Who's doing what sections?

Currently Shannon is working on the background of the blue sky. MJ is working on the first H (academics), Justin is working on the first W (arts), I'm working on the second W (athletics), and Kevin is working on the Warrior head to the right.

This weekend (feb 19 and 20) the school isn't open for us to come in, so it is nice to have a bit of a break from painting. All of us work fulltime too, so the extra volunteer hours keep us quite busy. Stay tuned for the next update!

It's a milestone year for my former High School - 2011 is Henry Wise Wood's 50th Anniversary! My art teacher, Lil Molstad contacted me about volunteering to create a commemorative Mural at the school. We gathered a few other Alumni and we are set to complete the painting by April for the 50th Celebration event!

Old Milwaukee Painting on Brick

Location: The Palimino - 109-7th Avenue SW, Calgary, AB

Project: Painting of their Old Milwaukee babe and classic logo

Media: Acrylic Paint onto aged brick.

Objective was to give the painting a vintage look and feel. If you're in Calgary check it out for yourself at The Palimino (center street and 7th ave train tracks across from Art Central!) A challenge for this project was getting up so high to paint, as it's in a stairwell. After a lot of thought, it fortunately worked out with a ladder/plank system.

This piece was my secret santa creation for fellow Etsy friend Elaine Robitaille of tooaquarius.
I'm so pleased that she's enjoying it on her window still, sparkling next to some of her favourite glass pieces. It's a handmade silver wire flower, hammered and wirewrapped with care. In the center are bursts of swarovski crystals in pinks, browns and greens. At it's base is a large turquoise pebble stone. Happy holidays!

Currently The Anthology Project are just $1088 shy of their ultimate $14000 goal! The project is led by my super talented friend Joy Ang. The Anthology Project's Second Edition is under production as we speak! The high quality, hardcover book is set to be published in 2011.

Contributing to the fund even get's you a copy of the book itself - ie. $30 gets you the new book and three buttons! Regular price the book is likely $25 (which is what I paid for the first edition), so it is almost the same thing.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend! Going to Milestones for a friend's birthday on Sunday, and spending the day with my family on Monday. I have a lot of Jewelry orders to catch up on as well. Hello! it's gotten pretty cold out there where I live, already transitioning to my fall wardrobe - scarves, shoes that cover my toes. Pretty bummed that we only got a few days of summer here in Calgary, and that I worked so much, didn't go out to enjoy 'the world' much the past 9 months. :(

I haven't talked about treasuries in a while, but this one I really wanted to share because of the colours and selction of items by the treasury creator! It's called "Ochre - Not such a pretty name..." by tekaandzoe. She included my Ocean Jasper bracelet. This is the kind of treasury curation I dreamed of when I photographed and listed the item. :)

I also wanted to mention my 5 glass pearl stacking ring was featured on this great blog! She blogged about large rings that caught her eye.

I've been so fortunate to attend three weddings this year! One was for my friend Ty, whom I met at my former job, we were brought together with our mutual passion of leadership roles in our social commities! Together we planned and executed events (same company but different offiices). Anyways my dear friend tied the knot and I proudly got to make the jewelry she wore with her white wedding dress! :)

Ty loves a modern and classic look. She wanted a bold statement jewelry piece (the bracelet) and decided no necklace was necessary. I think this was a smart styling move, as my petite friend (5' tall) elongated herself with the clean lines of her silleoette and neck! I think the earrings and bracelet are classic and can be worn at future events if she chooses to do so! When I saw her for the first time coming down the eisle, she took my breath away. Best wishes to the happy couple xo.

This was an enjoyable collaboration between Andrea and myself. When we first got together, we did not know what were were going to do, except we knew that we both share an appreciation of wearable art and fashion. We were able to draw upon each others strengths, and build something interesting. Overall a success and a great learning experience in bonding, troubleshooting with media, collaboration of ideas and working styles and motivating each other. The reception evening had a busy and exciting buzz about the event, seeing around 200 people through the doors. It was a pleasure to be shown with 40+ other artists and their work as well. Thank's to Vicky Chau, our curator, and the Untitled Art Society for giving us the opportunity to create and be seen in the local arts community.

Birthday weekend weddings

It's my birthday tomorrow, self-gifting a case of rainer cherries. These make me happy! I got them at the cross-roads farmer's market. I'm giving little bags of them away to co-workers and friends/family ... nothing tastes good unless shared!

Going to two weddings this weekend. I know, insane. Yes a wedding on my birthday, they are stealing my THUNDAR!! That is ok. I took my birthday off facebook so it's not really my birthday anymore anyways. Thank gawd Monday is a holiday.

I'm working hard alongside partner Andrea Lam for our collaborative piece for an upcoming art show! It's the first time I've been involved in a collaborative design, and I'm so thrilled to work with Andrea! I met her at Alberta College of Art and Design, where we both slaved for four years in the Visual Communications program. We've become great friends with a common interest in wearable design. Our piece is mixed media, calls upon rich textures and new world aesthetic.

I haven't pimped out any of my fellow artist's in a while, so it's about time I feature a talent that needs to be shared. I've known Tanya for a few years now, she's a freelance artist with a Bachelors of Design from the Visual Communications program at ACAD. Her personality and sense of humor translated in her illustrations set her above the pack. She's got a fresh, fun, modern sense of style and I hope you see it as well!

R: Where did you get your illustration style from? Influences?
TL: My "style" was found, after I did a lot of things I thought I /should've/ done, got frustrated and started drawing the way I /wanted/ to. Through trial and error, I found a way that seems to work fairly well.

I get my inspiration from a myriad of sources–retro artwork, of course, and also from a lot of contemporary illustrators. Some influences include: Mary Blair, Francis Vallejo, Dice Tsutsumi, Lou Romano, Jon Klassen, Joao Ruas, Albert Dorne, Noel Sickles, and many more.

R: What kind of process do go through to create your work?
TL: Normally I brainstorm, so wordmaps, looking at things that have the "feel" I want to convey, and a lot of completely illegible scribbles, exploring shapes and compositions. Then I scan, print out a copy, and refine. Once it's at a stage where I'm happy with the shapes, I take it into Illustrator and Photoshop and press the "create art" button. Haha, I draft my shapes up in Illustrator, and do the rest in Photoshop.

As promised in a previous teaser post... I'm so pleased to present the jewelry made for Josephine and Rick wedding. My friend Jo asked me a little while ago to create one of a kind, party, vibrant pieces for her bridesmaids. The wedding was held in the Dominican Republic, with their closest friends and family! I saw the photos, looked like a huge party!! :)

A few months prior to the wedding, I confirmed with Jo the colours of the jewelry. Many shades of purples, from lavender, plum, royal. The metals would be sterling silver. She wanted all the necklaces to match for her five girls, and for each set of earrings to have it's own personality, just like the girls who will be wearing them!

Happy Canada Day!

What did you do to celebrate the 143th birthday of our country? I slept in :) (yay!), hung out with my Mom and peter rabbit at home. In the evening, went to "Eat Wayne's Meat VIII", school friend's place for a fab BBQ. I made an attempt at Canadian Flag rice crispy squares ... i now appreciate the skill it takes to decorate with icing lol. They are peptol bismol pink because I didn't want to use a lot of red dye (gross fact: red icing = lots of dye = red poop).

I also found out a treasury that Jen created made it to the front page of etsy, and my Berry Hoop earrings sold right away! What a great day.

The above photo is a materials sample that I showed her, and she approved for her jewelry. We're doing 5 sets of earrings (all unique) and 5 sets of necklaces (all the same). My friend Desmond gifted me a tiny jewelers anvil for my birthday last summer, which prompted me to purchase a jewelry hammer (wide, smooth, short head) to go with it. I've been playing around with manipulating wire, building strength in shapes that I handform. I even enjoy lightly hammering my hoops that formerly were just left as round wire. Hammering is such a simple, but effective technique in building strength to my wire based designs, as well as creating some wonderful looks! I hammer 'almost' everything now.

To think it has been ten years since the "millennium" phase. Almost like it was a trend. Backstreet Boys (Millennium CD) , Will Smith, The Y2K "computer's are going to crash", Overplayed Prince's Party like it's 1999! Came and went. Haven't heard that song since then, maybe we should have played that on 2009 NYE for memories sake.

I work 40 hrs a week now, and I hope to keep up the jewelry. I would love to paint again too. Alas I didn't pick up a paintbrush in almost a year as well, this being my most recent painting from January 2009.

Let's hope this new year I will find balance. Financially, spiritually, with time, and in happiness.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada has been VERY and I say it in all capitals... VERY wintery (apparently not a real word according to firefox dictionary) already. It only takes one look out the window to know Christmas is almost here. To the local friends who back in September proclaimed on their Facebook status "Can't wait for it to snow!" well I'm sure you are happy now with the two feet worth! I don't mind snow itself, but the inconveniences it makes, particularly on the roads is what I can do without. We had some blizzard like winds last week, enough to make people hibernate!

A friend got into a car accident, (he's ok) hit a wall on the day of the worst weather, and it costs him 3k to fix the damage to his car! almost worth not going into work if something happens, it ends up costing more than your efforts in this crazy weather. Someone also bumped into him yesterday, so he is without a car again, what a headache!

I've been the busiest I've ever been with Jewelry sales and commisions this season! I found my Facebook page has helped incredibly with updating my network with what I do. Not only do people I know think of me more often for gifts or treating themselves, but friends of friends and people I have never met before are checking it out! I am not making a lot though, enough to get by for the month for sure, but I still really need a fulltime job. :( I just hope the new year will bring me some opportunities. I've been looking for something in the field I studied in, Graphic Design, and not many job listings around. Not to mention it's been a challenge to get an interview with so many people looking for the same work in this economy! There are like three job listings related to what I do a month. Luckily I have my jewelry to keep me sane, I work very hard at it.

Something kind of cool I got to work on. I originally ordered these beads from a carersattic on Etsy, loved the colors and various sizes. She told me they were her Grandmother's beads. I ended up creating two bracelets to sell back to carersattic and her mother, truly one of a kind, sentimentally valuable pieces. I had enough beads left for two more simple wire necklaces. It was a pleasure to work with her and to help her make beauty out of the aged vintage beads that she was destashing.

What motivates you as an artist?
My motivation comes from my desire and need to create with my Hands. Since I was three years old I have always been interested in crafts drawing painting sewing etc... It's in my blood.

I am incredibly happy going to my studio to create work that hopefully others will enjoy as well! I am very fortunate to be able to wake up every morning and create art, not many people my age are able to do this every day!

I feel that being an artist is what I was meant to do, I never tire of making art even when I have finished a 15 hour day I am excited to begin again the next day! There is so much to learn and explore and I get excited to make new discoveries. The possibilities are endless and my mind is always racing with new ideas.

What did you take away from your ACAD experience?
ACAD was a great place for me to explore who I was as an artist and a person. I was a very technically proficient painter before I went to ACAD. My high school art program in Saskatoon was amazing, I really learned a lot. I started with photo realism painting and while at ACAD ventured into many different things including glass blowing. I learned about conceptual art and how to include personal interaction and interpretation into my work.

I really enjoyed the open studios in 3rd and 4th year! I loved being given the time to explore whatever I wanted. The critical analysis of the work in group critiques as well as from the instructors really taught me how to analyze, to question everything I do (in a good way) and learn from it.

What type of materials do you work with?
Currently I am working mostly with oil, acrylic and watercolour paints. But I have worked with everything from pencil, pastel, glass, wood, bronze, fabric..... Every once in a while I try new crazy things just to see what they are like. I love the hardware store for this. The funny thing is that (experimental) things tend to work themselves into my practice in one form or another.

What should people look out for at your upcoming show?
I hope that you will be excited by what they see and find a connection to it.

My show is a collection inspired by a recent trip to New York City - The pieces do not depict a particular city scene but instead capture the emotion and energy of a city. The work examines the urban environment in different instances of light; the relationship between interior and exterior spaces and between structured and natural forms.

My brightly coloured and expressively painted images connect with our excitement about the 21st century urban environment and capture the speed, vibrancy, and edgy buzz that emanates from modern city life.

One of my best friends got married this year in Vernon, BC, Canada. The ceremony was lake side, and the weather co-operated on the day of! So thrilled to be there for her and experience the whole thing. Her wedding colors were white and red rose. I created the jewelry for the bridesmaids (including myself hehe). Here's what our necklaces and earrings looked like!

I have a serious toothache tonight :( it's really painful. It started yesterday, it's a tooth (with a filling or two) that was really temperature sensitive about a year ago, got it checked out, they couldn't do anything, so went home, eventually it felt normal... now the discomfort came back and it's really bad. The pain comes and goes, and when it gets bad, it hurts so much! I have taken advil and it helps somewhat. I am going to try to get an emergency appointment at the dentist tomrrow afternoon. :( wish me luck, I'm suspecting it might be a root canal?

A new design - Swarovski teardrop briolette cluster earrings

I discovered that a lot of women really like leverback style hooks! And why wouldn't they? They are elegant looking, very comfortable to wear, and secure close! They look great for people who have "longer earlobes" too.

Trying out a different camera for my photos, this one is a digital SLR, a Canon Rebel XT. Previously almost all of my photos were taken with a Sony Cybershot point and shoot style camera.

I have to let you in on a secret.... I LOVE~ making jewelry for bridal parties! I love working with people to include their wedding colors into their custom pieces. It's really fun to be a part of such a pinnacle event in a couple's lives!

Recently I was commissioned to create a couple pairs of earrings for a wedding who's colors were a vibrant teal! She picked a pair of earrings found in my fotki photo album to base the "look" off of, and emailed me a photo of the bridesmaid dress. I replied to her with a couple color swatches and design samples for them to pick from. Take a look at the final products :)

Earring & Necklace Swarovski Crystal set (+see more)

It's been a while since last post! These summer months have FLOWN by! I went on a 4 week Asia Adventure, on a quest for for new inspirations and fresh materials. I have so many more Swarovski crystal components, I was like a kid in a candy store over there. I wish Canada had a more affordable and wider selection of beads and findings readily available. In Hong Kong, there's an area where every store for blocks just sell beading/jewelry materials. So much choices and supplies, I spent hours there!

I've been keeping really busy with requests for custom Grad Jewelry during May and June... as well as custom Bridal Jewelry (creating elegant pieces for bridesmaids to match the wedding colors).
